Border Gateway Protocol BGP Tutorial

5 min read

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the one piece of routing technology that holds the entire Internet together, and understanding it starts with understanding the distinction between Interior and Exterior Gateway Protocols.

IGP vs. EGP

Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs) — things like OSPF and EIGRP — are designed to run inside a single autonomous system. Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGPs), on the other hand, run between different autonomous systems, and BGP is, in practice, the only EGP still in common use today.

Interior vs Exterior Gateway Protocols
IGPs operate inside an autonomous system; EGPs like BGP operate between autonomous systems.
