Embedded Event Manager (EEM) Tutorial
Embedded Event Manager (EEM) is a Cisco IOS feature that lets a router or switch watch for a defined event and automatically carry out one or more actions in response — essentially an “if this, then that” automation engine built right into the device, without needing any external scripting server. This is a handy topic for the ENCOR exam because it ties together network programmability concepts with traditional CLI-based configuration.
What Makes Up an EEM Policy?
Every EEM policy has two halves:
- Event — the condition being watched for (a CLI command being typed, an interface counter crossing a threshold, a timer expiring, and so on).
- Action — what the router does once that event is detected (print a message, send a syslog entry, run another CLI command, send an email, reload the device, etc.).
